Selecting a school - General Considerations
Except for financial reasons, the public/private status of a university should not be factored into your graduate program selection process.
High-quality programs exist in both types of institutions. More important is the institution's commitment to its graduate program.
This commitment is found in its willingness to maintain a first-class faculty, and to provide excellent facilities, including libraries, laboratories, computers, and other equipment.
(see Admissions - General Considerations)
Another important factor to consider is the strength of departments in fields related to your interests. This is important because you'll regularly work with scholars in disciplines related to your own.
College Selection - Checklist
Selecting a college is a large investment in time, money, and effort. You should carefully evaluate your selections.
Make Decisions Using These Criteria:
- Curricula, policies and administrative practices
- Housing facilities
- Courses offered
- Programs that interest you
- Admission requirements. Do you meet them?
- Quality of education versus cost of tuition. Make compromises if you feel it's the right decision.
- Services and leisure activities. Are your needs going to be met?
- Job placement rates for recently graduated students
- Accreditation, licensing, and student loan default rate
- Graduation statistics
- Percentage of students who complete programs
- Percentage of students who transfer to other schools
- Campus security. Review the school's campus security report
- Talk to your high school counselor, local employers, and the state higher education agency
- Check with the local Better Business Bureau offices to see if there are complaints about the college
- Financial aid availability
- Refund policies before enrolling in classes
- Counseling procedures for the school's financial aid office, location, and hours
- Procedures and deadlines for submitting applications to financial aid programs
- How the school selects financial aid recipients
- How will the school determine your financial need
- How and when you'll receive your aid
- Are there work-study programs available? What kinds?
