Introduction to Nursing Studies
Nursing education is a popular academic choice today among students who want to prepare for a career, change careers, or advance their nursing credentials. Nursing schools, colleges, and universities offer two and four-year programs in nursing that fit with your career goals in the profession.
Nurses work in hospitals, doctor's offices, research laboratories, extended care facilities, emergency care centers, schools, and for home-care companies. Some 60 percent of registered nurses work in hospitals. Those who complete a post-graduate nursing education may work as clinical nurse specialists, nurse practitioners nurse anesthetists, and nurse-midwives.
Degree Programs in Nursing Studies
Nursing schools and college programs offer education that leads to registered nursing credentials or diplomas in practical nursing. Many registered nurses complete a two-year associate degree to begin their careers, but many students opt for a four-year bachelor's degree program to boost their credentials. A master's degree program can qualify you for a healthcare administration or nursing management role.
One-year nursing education programs can prepare you for licensing to work as a licensed practical nurse.
Nursing Studies Career Outlook and Wages
More than 3.2 million new jobs will be created in the healthcare industry during the 2008-2018 decade, with registered nursing positions growing by 22 percent. Employment of licensed practical nurses is anticipated to increase by 21 percent.
Selected median 2009 annual earnings were:
- $63,750 for registered nurses
- $39,820 for licensed practical and licensed vocational nurses
Nursing education programs can prepare you for a successful career in caring for others.
