Introduction to Massage Therapy Studies
The science and art of massage therapy embraces more than 80 distinct techniques or modalities. The most basic massage practiced in the United States is called Swedish massage. Some of the other modalities include deep-tissue massage, sports massage, acupressure, Shiatsu, reflexology, craniosacral, myofascial release, hot stone therapy, trigger point, reflexology, and neuromuscular massage.
Massage therapists can be self-employed, or they take jobs in offices with other massage therapists and chiropractors, or at fitness centers, hotels and spas, nursing homes, and even airports and shopping malls. They may have many appointments per week, but most work part time or with fewer clients because of the physical nature of the work.
Massage Therapy Programs
All but eight states in the country regulate massage therapy practitioners, most requiring licensing. Massage schools offer education and hands-on training that can prepare you to pass state tests or the two national examinations: the National Certification Examination for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (NCETMB) and the Massage and Bodywork Licensing Examination (MBLEx).
Your studies may include:
