Health Services Studies & Education

Introduction to Health Services Studies

Health services professions encompass the widest area of employment in the healthcare industry. Students who enroll in health services programs can find work as occupational therapists, pharmacy technicians, physical therapist assistants, radiology technicians, or respiratory therapists, to name a few of the dozens of jobs under the Allied Health umbrella. Many of the jobs in the health services industry are growing as well due to the aging population and increased need for routine medical services, as well as through advancements in medicine.

Health services studies

A great deal of the specialty jobs in hospitals are held by people with less than a bachelor's degree. Healthcare employs some of the most highly educated people in the country, but the majority of health services jobs require a minimum of an associate degree or completion of a certificate program. Students pursuing two-year degrees in health services programs often enroll at community colleges or specialty vocational schools, while students seeking bachelor's degrees typically start their education at these colleges and transfer or enroll in four-year universities. Some hospitals, especially those in rural areas with smaller workforces, offer tuition assistance for students who promise to work at their facilities.

Growth of health services professions

Ten of the top-20 fastest-growing jobs in the nation are in healthcare, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. More than 3.2 million new positions are expected to be created from 2008 and 2018--more than any other industry. The majority of those jobs require less than four years of post-secondary education. Nearly 21 percent of the jobs in hospitals are health services professionals.
