Introduction to Business Studies
Graduates of business studies programs are equipped to take on the challenges of running businesses successfully. Business schools prepare them to work in a wide range of industries or work environments, in positions ranging from entry-level or middle management to public relations, marketing, systems analysis, finance, accounting, human resources, or sales.
What Can I Do With an Education in Business Studies?
Business studies programs provide the fundamentals of arts and sciences, like most undergraduate programs. However, this is a pre-professional degree, so your studies will also include accounting, marketing, economics, human services, ethics and law, international business, and statistics. You'll likely form a specialty in the latter portion of your program, such as marketing or finance. Approximately 10-15 percent of business studies degree-holders pursue master's degrees, and graduate degrees aren't required for many positions, although Master of Business Administration (MBA) holders, in general, command higher salaries and positions of leadership. In today's dynamic and highly competitive business environment, trained workers who are prepared to adapt to changes in technology and the workplace will likely find the most employment opportunities. While the career possibilities for business studies graduates are too numerous to name, Bureau of Labor Statistics projections for accountants and auditors, financial examiners, management analysts, financial examiners, and compliance officers indicate that these jobs will be among the fastest growing of all occupations over the 2008-2018 period. Business and financial occupations as a whole earned a median annual wage of $58,910, although this field is, of course, wide-ranging, and many higher- or lower-paying jobs exist.
