The Technical Career Guide

How to get required education for your Technical career?

Are you ready to begin a career in the field of technical studies? Explore the education requirements and job outlook for some common technical careers.

How to Get Required Education for Your Technical Career

Is it time to make a vocational choice? To reassess the career you have? To change fields? Examine your interests and assess your innate skills. These first steps should narrow down the choices considerably. If you need help, talk with a vocational counselor. Then investigate the training demanded by each of the professions on your short list.

Technical Schools

An education in technical studies may the best choice for many fields. A technical school is designed to prepare you for a career. The administrators and the instructors know the skills you'll need for your chosen profession. What's more, programs are often shorter and less expensive than academic programs. Like course content, the price of a program varies enormously between fields--and between types of institutions. Make sure you check out all your options and consider financial aid opportunities before committing to a program.

Choosing a Program

The first step in selecting a degree or certificate program is to determine what credential you need. While you can enter some fields with only a certificate, others require an associate's degree, and moving up in many fields requires a four-year bachelor's degree.

There are some professions that provide terrific examples.

Dental Assistant

Qualifications for a position as a dental assistant begin with a year of education. There are about 280 technical and vocational programs approved by the Commission on Dental Accreditation; they may lead to a diploma or a certificate. What's more, there are two-year programs for associate degrees in the field.

In some states, you'll need a license for some of the advanced duties of a dental assistant, such as radiological procedures.

If you're considering becoming a dentist, you might consider this position before making that long-term commitment. According to the Department of Labor Statistics, by 2018 employment in this field should grow by a third from 2008 levels.

Athletic Health Worker

You could get a position as an athletic trainer with a high school education, but the better jobs demand certification. This would include getting certified in cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

The best way to prepare is to earn a diploma are a certificate in physical education. You might choose a specialty like exercise science or recreation management.

Positions in some athletic health fields require specialist certificates. The Pilates Method Alliance, for example, offers certification in its field.

Advancement in the field requires more education. You'll probably need a bachelor's degree for a management position. Jobs in this field are expected to increase by 37 percent over the decade from 2008 to 2018.

Fireman

If you have a taste for action and a strong constitution, you might consider getting an associate's degree in fire science. This could lead to work as a fireman.

In addition to the coursework, you can expect training at the fire department itself; it could be an apprenticeship. Thorough training includes preparation to be certified as emergency medical technician.

You could also consider an associate's degree or a bachelor's degree in fire engineering or fire science. The programs take two and four years, respectively. The National Fire Academy requires an associate's degree for certification as an executive fire officer.

Hands-on Training

When you choose a technical studies program, look for one that includes an internship; it'll be the best introduction to work in the field.

The right education is important for your career. Technical Education always depends on learning & going to school. You should consider that except for financial considerations, the public or private nature of a university should not be a factor in selecting a graduate program. High quality programs exist in both types of institutions.

Of more importance is the institution's commitment to the graduate program. This commitment is found in its willingness to maintain a first-class faculty and to provide excellent facilities for advanced study, including libraries, laboratories, computers, and other equipment.

Another important factor to consider in many disciplines is the presence of strong departments in other fields relevant to your interests so that you can have access to scholars and courses in disciplines related to your own. Selecting the right school that offers the required degree for your education is a large investment of time, money, and effort. A consequent & careful evaluation of campus-based or online schools is important.
