The Health Services Career Guide

What does it mean to study Health Services?

Health services covers a wide variety of career paths that include hands-on medicine, medical office positions, administrative and insurance-related careers.

What kind of person succeeds in Health Services careers?
If you're responsible and mature and you have your feet on the ground, you'll make a reliable health services worker. Should you choose a career path that brings you in direct contact with patients--medical assistant, nurse, physician--you'll need sensitivity and great communication skills, both verbal and written.

Career prospects for Health Services?
The much-discussed "graying of America" means a boom in health services careers. From medical receptionists to medical insurance coders to physician's assistants, all will be in ever-increasing demand for the foreseeable future. Check any list of in-demand careers, and you'll see that health services careers account for the bulk of the positions.

Studying for a career in Health Services
You can get a well-paying job in health services with a Certificate, especially office-related careers like medical transcription or insurance and billing. Technical jobs, such as cardiovascular technologist, require an associate's degree. With a bachelor's you can get a health services career in administration. With a health services Ph.D., you'll have a career in public health or health care administration. Study online or on campus, but do pick an accredited school. Do get as much clinical experience as you can, if you pick a health services career path that requires it.

What's it like to have a Health Services career?
Unless you opt for a position in medical coding or insurance--in which case you might telecommute--you'll work in a professional setting: a doctor's office, clinic, or hospital. Careers in health services mean you'll work regular hours. Job benefits range from good to outstanding. Once you're in a health care position, some employers will pick up the tab for your further education.
