The Health Services Career Guide

A guide for your career plans in Health Services

Health Services careers allow you to benefit from excellent job prospects while helping other people.

Why are Health Services Careers so Healthy?
The scenario may seem a bit illogical – as the population gets healthier and more health-wise, the health industry continues to grow! But it makes sense when you look at the reasons. Most Americans take greater care of their health than before and visit health care professionals more regularly. As a result of this and other factors such as better nutrition, the population is living longer. The aging population places greater demand on health care, especially as chronic health conditions become more pervasive. At the same time, new awareness of alternative medicines and therapies has led patients to seek out a wider range of treatment.

All health care facilities need support staff such as Medical Secretaries, Medical Billing and Coding experts, Medical Transcriptionists and Dental Hygienists. Demand is soaring in all of these fields.

What Makes Health Services Such An Attractive Study Option?
You can be confident that your studies in the Health Services will result in excellent career opportunities. Here are some key facts from the Bureau of Labor Statistics:

  • In 2002, the Health Services was the largest industry in the US and provided nearly 13 million jobs.
  • About 16% of all new wage and salary jobs created between 2002 and 2012 will be in the Health Services – more than in any other industry – and that doesn’t include jobs created through self-employment.
  • Self-employment accounted for bout 382,000 jobs in Health Services.

What Level of Study is Needed for a Career in the Health Services?
Physician and surgeon jobs require the highest level of education, with significant education and training beyond a four-year college degree. Administrative and support jobs generally require less than 4 years of college education. For example, two-year programs resulting in certificates or associate degrees are the minimum standard credential for occupations such as Dental Hygienist or Radiologist.
