General Career Information: Fashion Jobs

Runways in Paris. Champagne parties in New York. Exhibitions in Tokyo. Beautiful models everywhere. Expensive clothes, cars, and jewelry. Careers in fashion certainly have a reputation for extravagance, elegance, and sexiness. However, the road to the top takes some hard work. You can't just show up on the scene with a few good fashion ideas. You need to study the craft, and study it well. Fashion is one of the most competitive career fields out there. If you walk in unprepared, you won't last for very long.

What preparation will you need?
Your fashion studies will provide you with in depth knowledge of everything you'll need for this exciting field. Of course, you'll learn about sewing, cutting, and drawing, but you'll also learn a great deal about some of the psychology involved with fashion. Studies have shown that certain colors, materials, and lighting create different moods in people. Since each fashion creation is a statement, you'll need to understand what combination of the above will illicit whatever feelings or reactions you desire. The better your understanding of these areas, the farther your career will go.

Fashions come and go
Because fashion is a very fickle industry, you'll also need to understand the importance of continuous development and reinvention. Not only must you have a few good ideas to break into the field, but you'll also need a continuous string of new ideas to stick around. Successful fashion careers require constant evolution and maturation. This often requires a great deal of research and development. This is best achieved by staying a few steps ahead of the general public. Keeping up with fashion magazines and attending shows will certainly help. However, you'll also need to spend a great deal of time in your workshop trying out new ideas. If you're successful, you might become the toast of the town overnight.
